McLaren Automotive’s latest addition to its Track 22 program is all about the tail.
The 600LT (LT stands for Longtail) receives its moniker from a body that is 74mm (2.9 inches) longer than a 570S coupe. Power is supplied by a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V-8 engine that produces 592 hp and 620 newton meters (457 pound-feet) of torque.
The model joins McLaren’s Sports Series, which slots below the Super and Ultimate series. The company says the 600LT is the “fastest, most powerful and most track-focused yet road legal Sports Series” model.
Track-ready features include an extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser and fixed rear wing — all made of carbon fiber. The 600LT is equipped with a top-exit exhaust system, which McLaren says contributes to additional weight savings.
To save weight inside the 600LT, McLaren included carbon fiber seats that debuted in the P1 hypercar, and used Alcantara, a lightweight leather alternative, throughout the cabin’s trim. Customers can opt for super-lightweight carbon fiber seats from the new Senna hypercar for more weight savings.
“We are further extending our very special LT family — albeit in limited numbers — and once again showcasing the ethos of optimized aerodynamics, increased power, reduced weight, track-focused dynamics and enhanced driver engagement that are the hallmarks of a McLaren ‘Longtail,’ ” McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said in a statement.
McLaren’s product plans for the Track 22 program call for launching 15 models or derivatives through 2022. The 600LT is the fourth model since 2016, following the 570S Spider, 720S and Senna.
The Longtail lineage goes back to the F1 GTR “Longtail” race car that ran in the 1997 FIA GT Championship and 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The automaker brought back the LT moniker more recently with the 675LT coupe and Spider in 2015.
McLaren said 600LT production will begin in October at its manufacturing plant in Woking, England. Prices start at 185,500 pound sin the UK. The car comes with a track day at a race circuit under the automaker’s Pure McLaren program.
